Autism Spectrum Disorder – “Happiness and Autism”

Supporting People with ASD and their Families to Towards a Happy Life – by Professor Rita Jordan – A fresh paradigm is emerging internationally in the field of Autism intervention. The focus is shifting from a negative definition of wellbeing where the goal has been to promote an ‘absence of distress’, towards a more positive outcome of promoting the ‘presence of happiness’.  In this pioneering training day internationally acclaimed educator and academic Professor Rita Jordan will discuss key issues that may interfere with the quality of life for individuals on the autism spectrum, explain how many of these issues arise, and consider interventions and approaches that can be helpful in restoring a quality of life, and the experience of happiness, for both them and their families.”

Key topics to be discussed include:

  • Key developmental differences and their implications for wellbeing.
  • The point of diagnosis.
  • The variability of autism and changes over the lifespan.
  • Working with professionals on long-term goals that enable a child to develop to be “as good as he/she can be” and to have a dignified and meaningful life
  • Recognising what happiness may mean for your child and ways of achieving and supporting it
