How our holiday program helps children with disability

children-with-disability

Everyone likes a holiday break especially when it offers new experiences and adventure. This is also true for families with children who have different abilities.

All ability holiday programs offer significant benefits to participants through a range fun activities whilst also enabling parents to gain some holiday respite of their own. Like children everywhere, a break from routine provides a chance to explore new places and experience new sensations, vital for ongoing physical, emotional and behavioural development.

Unfortunately, there are many children who cannot access holiday programs for numerous reasons. It could be because parents are not able to get children to holiday activities given the location or time, or perhaps they need to care for other children/siblings.  For some families, the complex nature of their child’s condition, or certain behaviours of concern, mean their child cannot participate in a group program. This can be extremely disappointing.

While many families who have a child with disability may have felt disheartened by their inability to be involved in a holiday program, the good news is that our 1:1 program allows a child to participate in a range of activities supported by an individual support worker.

As a support worker spends time with the child, they are also able to pick them up and drop them off from home. In addition, some disability funds will support the cost of the 1:1 support worker making the program a viable option for families that may not have considered a holiday program before.

Our holiday program is completely flexible – although our calendar displays activities on particular days, families can engage support workers on any holiday weekday (not public holidays) and select any activity from the calendar.
